The oral bioavailability of many botanical extracts is erratic and poor due to limited gastro-intestinal absorption, degradation at intestinal pH, and extensive intestinal metabolization.
Bioavailability can be improved by using new delivery systems which can enhance the rate and the extent of solubilization into aqueous intestinal fluids and the capacity to cross biomembranes.
Phospholipids exhibit a marked affinity for polyphenols. By combining in a suitable molar ratio polyphenols and phosphatidylcholine, Indena has developed a new line of non-covalent supramolecular adducts named “Phytosome®s”(1,2).
Phytosome®s show better pharmacokinetic and therapeutic profile than their non-complexed herbal extracts.
The Phytosome®s technology, markedly enhances the bioavailability of selected phytochemicals.
